New Star Trek vs Old Star Trek
So, lately, it seems that every time someone brings up Star Trek, there's a heated debate over whether or not the new Star Trek movie was out of line, or if it was completely amazing. I've seen people in their 50's get upset over this, so I thought I'd bring the discussion here.
If you don't know, Star Trek '09 was set in an alternate universe, where there were several differences from the actual original story. Most of us know what alternate universe means, but just in case, it's when you take one or more original theme(s) from something and subtract elements while adding your own new elements. The elements can be characters, settings, etc.
And my question now is, What did you think of the newest Star Trek movie? Was it the best? The worst? In the middle? What did you like/dislike about it? Why? If you could change something, what would it be? How would you compare it to other sci-fi movies of the same caliber?
As for me, I loved it. I went to the very first showing at my theater with my Trekkie parents and sister. I was confused at first, because that wasn't what happened to Kirk in the original series, but it didn't take long for me to figure out that it was AU. I also looked at it from an outsider's perspective as well. People who don't know a lot about Star Trek can totally watch this movie, because it's very explanatory. Sure, there are jokes that only Trekkies would get, but they were subtle references, like the red shirt dying and the quotes, "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a physicist."
Overall, I thought the movie was great, and I can't wait for the sequel. Star Trek '09 ranks as my second favorite movie of all time.

Re: New Star Trek vs Old Star Trek
I grew up on the various original Star Trek series, and I loved the new movie.
The thing about Star Trek in general is that there have been multiple alternate universe/alternate timeline iterations in it's past, but that doesn't make them bad. What the new Star Trek movie did well was pull from the older series and give you characters and scenarios that are familiar and easy to identify with. Kirk still felt like Kirk, Spock still felt like Spock, and the story still felt like I was watching Star Trek, though obviously more updated.
I don't think in terms of the setting and everything that it was perfect, but to me this isn't very surprising, and Star Trek has - despite my love for it - kind of fallen by the wayside among nerds in recent years. Frankly, I think we needed some kind of reboot to re-interest people in the universe and sort of jump start the fandom again.
So, yeah, it wasn't perfect, but I can definitely live with it how it was, and I'm really interested to see the sequel. Having grown up with Star Trek, it was just really fun to see a new version of the characters I was familiar with on the big screen, so I'm willing to settle for less than perfect!

Re: New Star Trek vs Old Star Trek
I've been a Trek fan all my life, and a reboot sounded like sacrilege to me. But I love the new movie, and it brought Star Trek back into the public eye as something cool and respectable that you can be proud to be a fan of.
My brother however... takes the opposite opinion. He hates it, and can give you a very detailed analysis if you get him on the subject (I'd recommend you don't) of massive plot holes, and places where it doesn't tie in with the originals. He doesn't buy the alternate universe idea and thinks it's lazy and convenient but without any merit.
But for me it was fun, and I don't want to get too deep into picking flaws with films, I'd rather just enjoy them. And this one I did!

Re: New Star Trek vs Old Star Trek
I am a fan on Facebook of the Star Trek page, and they posted a question the other day, asking what the best Star Trek movie was. It really seemed that people are totally split over this. There wasn't anyone who was in the middle, even remotely. Everyone was either 'THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER!' or "I HATED THIS MOVIE!' and I just don't understand that.
I suppose I do understand, I just don't agree.
Either way, I really liked the AU theme, I loved the characters and what they did with them.
Also, as a side note, I'll be going in costume to the sequel premiere.

Re: New Star Trek vs Old Star Trek
So... I was on a 15 hour flight to China when I saw the new Star Trek movie (which isn't so new anymore). But ANYWAY. I was excited because I totally grew up on Kirk, Spock, and Dr. McCoy (Please. I swore I was going to marry Dr. McCoy when I got older because I was in love with him).
I totally agree. I felt like I was just watching another old ep of the original Star Trek. It was awesome!
Ditto. And it's weird that there weren't many in the middle, as usually there are a lot that tend to fall there. Probably not fans of Star Trek on facebook. Haha.
As uncomfortable as dresses are... I'd totally get a red suit and cut my the last inch and go as Lieutenant Uhura.
Oh man! Can we open that up for discussion? Original Star Trek, Uhura had short hair and the new one, she had long hair. I really don't know if I like her really long hair. Like, I get the AU and stuff, but it was just so hard for me to accept it. I don't know why.
